Man pleads guilty to beating mom and killing dog, but says he's mentally ill

Times Leader - 11/15/2018

Nov. 15--WILKES-BARRE -- A Harveys Lake man accused of beating his mother and killing the family dog pleaded guilty Wednesday, but said the crimes occurred due to mental illness.

Charlie Ide, 36, admitted to two charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, cruelty to animals and reckless endangerment.

However, Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas deemed that Ide is mentally ill.

Lupas made a change to Ide's bail, saying he would be allowed to have supervised "therapeutic contact" with his mother, Andrea Ozovek. However, he will remain in jail pending his sentencing after having been previously denied bail.

Ide admits he beat his mother with a baseball bat during the height of Winter Storm Stella on March 14, 2017.

Ozovek suffered a brain bleed along with severe injuries to her arms and legs. Ide also killed the dog with the bat.

Lupas scheduled Ide's sentencing for Jan. 28.
