LIU partnership gets $7.2 M grant for mental health programs and services

Jan. 28—The Luzerne Intermediate Unit is getting a four-year $7.2 million grant for mental health programs and services through a partnership with the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit and the Lehigh Carbon Intermediate Unit.
The Project Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education grant is one of approximately 20 awarded in the U.S. by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to an announcement from LIU Executive Director Anthony Grieco.
The grant will expand suicide awareness training opportunities for students; implement a universal mental health screener for school staffs; and create an electronic data system to connect mental health practitioners with mental health providers.
The LIU provides programs and services to schools in the following school districts: Wilkes-Barre Area, Wyoming Valley West, Hanover Area, Greater Nanticoke Area, Northwest Area, Lake-Lehman, Dallas, Tunkhannock Area, Wyoming Area, Pittston Area, Crestwood and Hazleton Area.
