State/Federally Funded Programs

The following low-cost insurance programs are available to uninsured children and adults who qualify.

Click on each program's name to obtain more information about eligibility and registration. Also, ask insurance carriers in your county if they offer low-cost coverage for young adults.

  • Cover VA - Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan (FAMIS)
    FAMIS is Virginia's program that helps working families provide health insurance to children under age 19 who live in low-income households. This site is available in English and Spanish. For more information, call 866-87FAMIS (866-873-2647) or click here.
  • FAMIS – Smiles For Children Dental Program
    Dental services for children enrolled in FAMIS or FAMIS Plus are provided through the  program. The Smiles For Children program encourages good dental health and recommends regular check-ups with your child's dentist.
  • FAMIS MOMS
    The FAMIS MOMS program provides health care coverage for pregnant women. Good health care during pregnancy is important for you and the baby. FAMIS MOMS encourages pregnant women to get early and regular prenatal care to increase the likelihood for a healthy birth outcome.
  • Medicaid
    Medicaid is a program that pays for medical assistance for certain individuals and families with low incomes and resources. This program became law in 1965 and is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments (including the District of Columbia and the Territories) to assist States in providing medical long-term care assistance to people who meet certain eligibility criteria. Medicaid is the largest source of funding for medical and health-related services for people with limited income.
  • Medicare
    Our Medicare section offers comprehensive, official information provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The official government handbook, "Medicare & You," includes sections on Medicare coverage choices, choosing a prescription plan, financial assistance, your Medicare rights, and more.

SHIPs mission is to educate, advocate, counsel and empower people to make informed healthcare benefit decisions. SHIP is an independent program funded by Federal agencies and is not affiliated with the insurance industry.
